This shawl is very large, at 65 inches square with the fringe measuring another 20 inches. It is really stunning and very unusual – or at least I’ve never come across one quite like it before. It is, however, quite delicate – and I think it is a very old example of this kind of shawl. It is a Cantonese, double sided piano shawl in black silk, embroidered with two sinuous pale cream silk dragons, with the pearl of wisdom in the very centre. There is a small amount of discolouration on the cream silk, and a few loose threads, but nothing major. The fringe is a little tangled in places and could do with a bit of attention. You could use this as a hanging, or a superbly decorative bedspread, or even wear it with care. But do remember to keep it out of direct sunlight – it is a precious and rather fragile item – also quite surprisingly heavy. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
