Antique Chinese Zhou Dynasty Gold & Silver Inlaid Archaic Bronze Chariot Fitting
Gold & Silver Inlaid Chariot Ornament. The piece is finely cast and inlaid with precious metals and dates from a renaissance period in the history of Chinese art and archaeology, from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty to the Warring States Period. Inlaid examples such as this, where the subject matter depicts a mythical creature like a tiger or dragon, are particularly highly sought-after. This type of piece represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship and ornamentation in early Chinese art and warfare. The ornament measures approximately 12.2 cm long and is in good stable condition consistent with an item that was previously buried and is over 2000 years old. Much of the gold inlay is missing, but a significant amount of silver inlay is still intact. Surface corrosion is also present along with a small puncture to the top of the ornament. The ornament is comparable to some recent fittings offered at Sotheby’s and Christie’s from major collections, like those of Stephen Junkunc. Overall, a very fine and rare example. The fitting comes to us from the collection of a very prominent investment family and founder of one of the first mutual funds.
