Superb 1930’s vintage Chinese bakelite black wafer back mahjong set with 16 flowers, dragon one dots, framed white dragons and framed blanks. Impressive set of 156 tiles, 152 for play and 4 spare blanks making the set more than suitable for NMJL mahjong. All 16 of the flower tiles show important characters and some scenes from the 14th century historical novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature and considered by many to be the greatest of all Chinese novels. One dots are carved as the hard to find dragons chasing pearls interestingly three of the four number ones have been placed upside down! The tiles are an unusually shiny orangey yellow form of Chinese bakelite and measure a chunky and very tactile 31mm x 23mm x 14.5mm. The black wafer backs have a high gloss finish and the tiles make a very satisfactory “clink” when played with. Set comes with 4 little bone dice in their coffin box, celluloid wind disc, a large quantity of bone scoring sticks and original leather carry case, case has taped repairs to the edges of its lid. Tiles in superb vintage condition and show only minor signs of use. A wonderful set with a fascinating glimpse into China’s history perfect for play or display.
