Antique 19th Chinese Tibetan Dragon BoX Jade Trigram Plaque & Turquoise beads
A deeply repousse copper lidded box with designs of mountains, clouds, and two four-claw dragons with a flaming pearl in-between. In the center of the lid is a nice deeply carved, hand polished jade with trigram marks and a shou character in the center. The jade looks white because of a large white cloudiness on one side. There are 22 turquoise cabochons circling the jade. The lid and box make a rattling sound when moved. This might be from reliquaries inside. The flaming pearls and dragon heads fit together from lid to box. The box is unmarked. 6 3/8″ (16.2 cm) diameter x 2 ¾” (7.0 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 4.2 oz (575 g). There are no cracks or breaks. The bottom has a very small dent along the edges and another small one near the center. Two turquoise cabochons on the top missing. The metal has oxidized to a nice brown patina. The base has a lighter rectangle mark where a label may have been. The lid has a tendency to slide to one side unless it’s revolved to the correct position. A wonderful hand made box with age and artistry that would grace a home or collection. I love the jade on the lid and how it rattles when moved. Antique Hand Carved & Lacquered Chinese or Tibetan Dragons with Wood Frame
Antique Hand Carved & Lacquered Chinese or Tibetan Dragons w/ Wood Frame. Up for sale is this wood panel with lacquer paint of a pair of Chinese or more likely Tibetan dragons, dated unsure if in the 19. The panel is in a rectangular shape and further wood framed. The Tibetan dragons facing each other are hand painted with lacquer in relief, displaying shiny red, orange and green colors. Part of the long bodies of the dragons are hidden behind two carved unique signs with flower motifs as decoration, suggesting that they may stand for forests. A unique sign in between the two dragons may stand for mountains and trees to have clouds at the lower sides. The corners of the upper edges of the wood frame show the dovetails, revealing a good craftsmanship. No specific colors are found to the lower edges of the frame (not shown). The artwork can either be wall hanged or rested on a table. Is often made from resin extracted from trees and has been in use for decoration in painting since antiquity. It is a shiny and glossy coating or finish when applied to wood or metal. Tibetan dragon, also called Druk, is the Thunder dragon of Tibetan and Bhutanese mythology. It is with a long thin body and closely related to the Chinese Lung. The Tibetan dragon is part of Tibetan life and culture, indispensable as cultural consciousness and identity in Tibet. Like Chinese Lung, the Tibetan dragons traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods, as stated in Wikipedia. Dimensions, 24 ½” wide x 11″ high x 2 ½ deep; Weight, 4 lbs & 14.8 oz (2.23 kg). Condition: Good and clean, with mild lacquer paint and wood chip loss, consistent with age and use without hurting its beauty.
