Such a robe would’ve been worn during either by a member of the Qing imperial family or court for celebrating a special occasion – possibly a wedding or birthday. A similar example can be seen on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. The robe is very finely decorated with couched gold and silver thread. There are nine dragons on the robe: on the neck, chest, shoulders, and back. The entire background of the robe is decorated with sihe ruyi – the four heads of the wish-granting sceptre, auspicious imagery meaning “may your wishes be granted in the four directions”. Also on the robe are medallions of peaches and bats surrounding endless knots – further wishes of happiness and longevity. The bottom of the robe has a lishui, or standing water, border with the mount of longevity rising above the water. It’s important to note that there are five colors of metallic thread on the robe border – a regulation put in place during the 18th century. While dragon robes and all of their uses are not fully understood, it is possible that given the apricot color and the specific flowers (which may relate to a specific month), that this robe was made for a ceremony at a specific altar or temple during a specific time of year. The robe measures almost 65 inches from sleeve to sleeve and is in good condition consistent with period use. The color remains quite strong and vibrant. There is some fading here and there to the apricot yellow color. There are the expected loose threads throughout – but mainly concentrated on the shoulders and on the seat area of the robe. There are old repairs visible on the inside of the robe to resecure some of the couched metallic threads. The buttons are a gilt metal and appear original.
