The second and third photos show the complete panel, both front and back that is offered here. It is hanging on a normal size door so you can get an idea of the scale and length. Made of dark blue silk with silk and gold colored metallic thread embroidery and a backing of light brown or beige color linen fabric. Please see the photos for characteristics of age and judge for yourself. It’s quite long and measures approximately 18-1/2 inches wide by 62 inches long (over 5 feet). The panel has two small holes in the blue fabric, pointed out in photo 5. There are scattered water spots, water rings and faded spots on both front and back fabrics but some are not very visible in normal display. Please see all the photographs. Someone must have used this panel as a table runner and set objects on it in the past to cause the light water spots. The water spots and rings are not very noticeable on the front when you are looking at the panel at eye level in normal room lighting. The way the silk is woven makes it look different in different angles of light. I had to photograph the panel at an upwards angle in bright window light to get them to show up in the pictures. And normally the panel would not be displayed that way. A few spots do show more but others are not very noticeable on the front. The dark spot shown in photo 6 and a few water spots are visible but overall the panel displays well in my opinion. The water spots are more visible on the back linen fabric. Some of the gold metallic embroidery threads are pulled up or lifted up from the surface in several areas but most of the gold embroidery is good. This was difficult to photograph but it is stated here for the record. The embroidery was caught on something and some threads are pulled out or up from the fabric. One of the toes on the bottom right side foot of the dragon has much of the gold threads missing or pulled up. Please see photo 10 for this toe and an example of pulled gold threads. The top braided cording is coming off with missing stitches and has also been re-sewn in some areas. The cord might be a later addition but still old. Some possible loose threads randomly and other normal wear from age and use. There are a few puckered or slightly pulled threads in the blue silk background across the width. Some of the thread stitching that attaches the front blue silk to the linen may be missing on the back but the panel is firmly intact. There is likely some slight light grayish dust soil on the white embroidery from storage. The dark blue silk and linen are in good condition without deterioration, no rips, no other holes, no other repairs other than those noted in the description. This is a beautiful antique Chinese panel with fine embroidery of a strong visual image. The dragon is both fierce and graceful. The gold metallic thread embroidery depicts the dragon’s body with a twisted movement and detailed scales on the surface. The fabrics are supple and soft, the colors are still strong.
