The incense burner has been in the family home for the past 95 years and is in excellent condition. Comes with official documentation from the Family Estate of Leo Rassieur as to the history. Dimensions (approximate): Approximately 6″ inches tall x 4″ inches wide. Starts Sunday, February 28, 2016 and ends March 28, 2016. Several lots will be uploaded over the month of March 2016. Los Angeles, CA USA. HISTORY OF THE COLLECTION. Leo Rassieur was a civil war officer, captain in the 30th Missouri Infantry, who fought to abolish slavery. Originally from Prussia, Germany, (born in 1844), he moved to the United States to St Louis Missouri as a young man where he joined the army and later became a probate judge. Several belongings of Leo Rassieur are currently on display at the Missouri History Museum. Rassieur passed away in 1929, leaving his artwork and personal belongings to his daughter, Estelle Rassieur Kelsey. A year after his death in 1930, his daughter Estelle would set out on a cruise called the World Cruise with her husband Theodore Kelsey and daughter Patricia. On this cruise they collected decorative art, paintings, and artifacts from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. During her lifetime, Patricia had these artifacts carefully on display in her home until she passed away. Throughout the month of March 2016, new lots will be continuously uploaded. The entire collection boasts over 150 pieces featuring some notable art such as 19th and 20th century European and American sculpture and painting, original photographs of Leo Rassieur and his family, letters, itineraries, and coins collected during the World Cruise reflecting the dates and places that Estelle visited on her journey, Pomegranate lamp by Tiffany Studio New York, jade, opium pipes, seals, Indonesian puppets and screens, Chinese funeral procession figurines from “Peking”, vases, incense holders, prayer bells, souvenir spoons from around the world from the 19. And early 20th centuries (owned by Leo Rassieur, his wife, and daughter), paintings on silk, japanese hair pins, old coins and bank notes from around the world, to name a few examples. CAPTAIN LEO RASSIEUR BIOGRAPHY. Leo Rassieur was born April 19, 1844 at Wadern, Prussia (Germany) the son of Theodore and Margaret Rassieur. Leo came to St. Louis, MO with his father in 1851, was educated in the public schools, graduating from the St. Louis High School in 1860. Shortly after graduating high school he became a member of the 30. Rassieur participated in several battles across the southChickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, and Spanish Fort. Louis and became a judge. He kept ties with his military past, becoming deeply involved with Union veterans groups by holding positions in both the Missouri Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States and the Grand Army of the Republic. He was married on July 9, 1872 to Mary C. Kammerer Rassieur of Wheeling WV. They gave birth to daughter Estelle Rassieur Kelsey.
