Antique 18th Century Yellow Jade Belt Hook Letter Opener. Entire Piece is just under 8. Jade is almost 3.5. Widest part of Jade just over. At that time in the early 1960s it was dated circa 1700 for the carved Jade Chinese dragon, Dynasty Unspecified. It is believed to be Hetian Jade, also known as Hotan, located in northwestern China (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) and has always been synonymous with the best nephrite. The area is known for yielding the famous top-quality white “mutton fat” jade. Carved with great detail, smooth grip and flow. There is a slight edge on lower tail area, unsure if intentional angle that was not smoothed or accidental wear. Please note pictures for detail and wear, there are faint scratches and possible nicks from age and adventure, so kindly take note this is not a freshly created item but rather a piece of traveling history across continents. Actual letter opener is unmarked and may have been added/replaced in the late 1800s early 1900s. Silver or silver plated appears to be the material with the noted tarnish. Piece is truly unique and will add delight and conversation to any collection.
