Antique Chinese Poss. Ancient Terra Cotta Temple Roof Tile Dragon Foo Dog Face
This antique Chinese tile is a rare find for collectors of Asian antiques. The tile features intricate designs of a dragon and a foo dog face, possibly originating from an ancient temple roof. The primary material used in crafting this piece is porcelain and pottery, and it is an original item from China. The region of origin and maker of this tile are unknown, but the age of the item suggests it has significant historical value. As a unique addition to any collection of Chinese antiques, this tile is sure to impress. This is a nice antique possibly ancient Chinese terra cotta temple or roof tile decorated with dragon or foo dog / mythical beast face with eyes & nostrils. I’m not certain exactly how old the tile is, I know that it’s quite old. I had a fellow antique dealer look at them as well and he believes they could date to the 13th century possibly earlier. In pretty nice shape as the pics show with some imperfections / wear from age and it comes exactly as shown with an impressed mark on the back. The back of the tile has remnants of glue or something else where it was once affixed to something. It measures approximately 6″ x 3 1/8″ Please see my other tiles as well.

Truly unique reproductions of various Chinese Temple Tiles, many created by Koji potter J. Ho (or other unknown artists) sometime in the 1980s or earlier… Temple tiles were used to adorn the rooftops of temples, palaces and homes to encourage good spirits while preventing evil visitors. Each tile is individually carved, fired and handpainted with beautiful colorations and detail. Ho has not produced any tiles in many years…. And an internet search does not reveal any information about his current life and whereabouts in China. As a result, there are no additional figurines being created, making these tiles rare indeed. The detail of each figure is extraordinary and includes warriors, many different dieties and gods, each of which I have attempted to explain in each listing. (Search: Chinese Temple Tiles). The warlord has flowing robes and a beautiful crown secured with a large comb. His outfit includes a large smiling Buddah belt. Chi Lin is a mythical Chinese creature with the head of a Dragon, the body of a Horse, and the scales of a Carp fish. Or the Chinese Unicorn, Chi Lin brings strong, protective. Energy with blessings of good health and prosperity. Unfortunately there is no chop mark on this piece, so I have no record of its artist. However, it does match many of the other figurines in my collection in terms of workmanship, colorations and style. Measures approximately 11″ high by 13″ wide. Mounted on an adjustable Lucite stand which displays the figure to its best advantage. The base of the stand measures 10″ by 4.25″ by 1″ and the supports are 8″ tall with adjustable display height. I have taken multiple photos of each piece to provide the most accurate depiction for your review. The condition of this tile. There are no defects or repairs. Out of a collection of 9, only 2 tiles are still available and are listed individually on this site. Please contact me if you are interested in learning more about the remaining tiles.
