Antique Cinnabar Red Lacquer Carved Lidded Box. The color is sort of brick red, the photo of the side of the box on the books is the most accurate photo of the color. Very intricate carved detail! The top shows 2 fighting dragons. Wonderful detail of facial expressions, different patterns on their heads, fine detail on the scales and claws. Are part of the bas relief. The deeper background has very fine geometric Chinese style design. On the bottom in very faint carved letters it says “China” but you have to look hard. This belonged to my great grandfather who was born in 1890. My mother can recall seeing this box in their home in San Francisco all her life, she was born in the 1930’s, so I know it it dates from at least that decade, but most likely is older. I was given the box as a little girl in the 1960’s. Condition- wonderful considering it’s age. Upper corners have chips along edges, inside rim has chips and missing lacquer as well. Base has larger chips (see photos). Signs of scuff/wear on bottom. One corner of lid is cracked (see diagonal photo). The actual cinnabar looks wonderful except for the corner chips as mentioned.
