ANTIQUE 19thC CHINESE EXPORT SOLID SILVER DRAGON MUG, LUEN WO c. 1890
Antique late-19th Century Chinese export solid silver mug, of tapering form, the sides are beautifully decorated in relief with a scene of a Chinese village, very crisp and detailed, centering a vacant shaped cartouche. The handle is beautifully modelled like a dragon. The base is Hallmarked Chinese Export silver (900+ silver standard), Maker’s mark LW for Luen Wo, A very important retail silversmith based in Shanghai, he also traded in jewellery, diamonds and embroideries. His artworks show a very high quality that only equals the standards of Wang Hing, in Canton. ANTIQUE 19thC CHINESE EXPORT SOLID SILVER DRAGON MUG, LUEN WO c. Luen Wo was very productive and relied on a large number of designers and artisans, such as Ning Zhao Ji. His items generally bear the mark with his full name or the initials LW and the mark of the artisan who realised the piece. The firm mainly produced items in the traditional Chinese style, featuring classical motifs such as bamboo leaves, prunus blossoms, chrysanthemums and dragons but, especially after 1880, he is recorded as having also made Peranakan-style items. Chinese Export Silver Lidded box Wang Hing 198g A splendid late 19th century Chinese export silver lidded, circular container or box by Wang Hing. With beautifully detailed repousse dragons to lid and sides and rearing dragons as the feet. The box retains its gilded interior. It is stamped WH 90 on the base, together with a Chinese character mark. It is in very good condition with very minor marks. Height 6.5 cm, diameter 11 cm (including feet). Thank you for reading.
