RARE 13th A. D. Yuan Dynasty Large Longquan Celadon Dragon Plate
100% authentic antique, 13th Century Large Green Celadon Plate. It was made at Longquan Kiln in Zhejiang, China. The plate was decorated with four-toe dragon facing firing ball amid the broad cloud, with deep olive green celadon glaze. In ancient far east politics (China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam), Dragon was the symbol of “ruler” where five-toe dragon was the Chinese emperor and four-toe dragon was the king or the emperor of smaller kingdom. The deep olive green was the signature color of Yuan Celedon ceramic. The decorated plate like this item along with its huge size of 36 cm made this item most likely one of the tributes from Chinese court to the foreign lands like Thailand and Mynmar, at the time of Yuan Dynasty. The plate is heavy, sturdy and has been repaired by all original pieces (using white epoxy adhesives). Some area appears brownish due to natural color from burial soil penetrating the glaze. Despite being repaired, this item appears spectacular and has tasteful character, reflecting the authority of the ancient art. You can display this plate as shown in the picture or can put green color on the repair if you want to. Width about 36 cm. This is 100% antique, NOT reproduction. The officials of Yuan and Ming Dynasty were known for contacting with southern foreigners and for recruiting these foreigners to pay respect to the Chinese Emperor. In the Yuan Dynasty written record, in the year 1271, the Kublai Khan, the Chinese Emperor of Yuan Dynasty sent an envoy to Kingdom of Pagan (in today’s Myanmar) to demand tributes from the King of Pagan. In the Ming Dynasty written record, in the year 1384, a tribute of 200 products came from Siam and, in return, diplomatic gift of 19,000 Chinense ceramics, among other things were provided in return to Siam. The item was discovered from Thai-Myanmar Border in Tak Province where ancient people buried ceramics in their burial sites. Thai archaeologists believes that these people were Thai settlers along the border between Thai kingdom of Sukhothai and Ancient Burmese kingdom of Pegu or Hongsawadee near India Ocean. These settlers were quite well traded because, in the burial sites, they not only found huge quantity of ceramics from Sawankhalok Kilns (Sukhothai Kingdom), Sankampang Kilns (Lanna Kingdom) but also found substantial quantity of Chinese ceramics (already popular at that time) from Southern Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties and some quantity of Vietnamese and Cambodian. After major wars between Thai and Burmese broke out, the area was abandoned, only became occupied later by hill tribe people that migrated into the area in 20th century. The total quantity of ceramics found during 1970s were in thousands but only one plate with dragon incise is seen. Some ceramics from these sites are also exhibited at renowned Southeast Asia Ceramic Museum on Bangkok University’s Rangsit Campus in north Bangkok.
