Large Chinese White Jade Ruyi Scepter Qilong Dragons Display Stand Box Nanyang
LARGE CHINESE JADE RUYI SCEPTER WITH DISPLAY STAND & STORAGE BOX. , or scepter, made of carved jade. A ruyi is a curved decorative object that serves as either a ceremonial scepter in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. The “ruyi” image frequently appears as a motif in Asian art. This one has a typical form with a curved handle and head. The head is decorated with a medallion and scrolls. The handle has two beautifully carved qilong dragons facing each other with a ball in the middle. The scepter is made of solid jade, white in color with some brown mottling and small black inclusions. It measures about 13 1/4″ long, 3 5/8″ wide, and 3 1/8 tall. The scepter comes with a wooden display stand and its original storage box. I believe the labels on the box (Chinese text) indicate that the scepter was made at a jade carving factory in Nanyang, sometimes referred to as the “city of jade”. I’m not sure how old it is, but the box probably dates to the third quarter of the 20th century. Condition of this Chinese jade scepter is EXCELLENT. It appears undamaged with no chips or cracks. The jade has some natural mottling and inclusions. The display stand and storage box are also in good shape. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself. See my other listings. For more great items! Carved From Solid Jade. Closeup of Handle With Qilong Dragons.
