CHINESE EXPORT SILVER BOX c1875 DRAGONS IN WAVES – BREATHING FIRE A very fine, hand crafted c1875 (possibly earlier) Chinese export silver battling dragons in waves scholar’s box. Classic rectangular shape, with well hinged cover. The cover with dragons battling for the sacred pearl. Here the pearl is fiery orb design, not often seen. The dragons are rising from rolling waves. One breathing fire at a small fish below – an even more unique design feature. Framed in rolling leafy vine and chrysanthemum flower head border work. The sides and back panel with conforming dragon, and pear decoration, and rolling cloud border. The interior is solid silver, there are no wood panels or wood base, as found in lesser, later period boxes. This fine c1875 Chinese export silver dragon box is 7 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches. And it weighs 27 standard ounces. The box is 100% silver construction, there is no wood interior as found on many. Hallmarked in series of characters. In very fine condition.
