Chinese Yellow Dragon Chasing Flaming Pearl Yellow Bowl Kangxi Mark and Period The exterior incised with a pair of striding dragons in pursuit of’flaming pearls’ amidst cloud scrolls, above a border of waves, the interior with a similar roundel, applied overall with a transparent glaze of yellow tone. A Beautiful Pair Of Chinese Cloisonne Vases Of Dragons Chasing The Flaming Pearl

Here is a very nice pair of old matching cloisonne dragon vases. They each depict a pair of dragons chasing but never catching the ever elusive flaming pearl. They are loaded with character and fine details that only better specimens would display as the pictures show. Each is incised on the base CHINA as the pictures show. They sit upon matching pierced carved dark wood stands which are not original to them, but do fit nicely and show them off well. The vases weigh in at a heavy 26 oz. Combined (736 grams for you metric people) and the stands add another 3 oz. The vases themselves stand at just under 6 1/2 and the wood stands add another inch or so to that. Although the vases may look crooked in the pictures, they are not. They sit solid and stand straight. In some pics the camera bends them somehow. Any white spots are just the the reflections from the lights used to photograph with. The vases are in overall very good condition considering their age of approximately 100 +/- years. There are a couple of very small flaws on one vase, nearly invisible and won’t show on pictures. You can’t feel them with your hands and you can’t see them without looking very, very hard but they are there. On this vase there is a small bit of damage on the neck under the lotus bloom at 5 o’clock right where the leaf plume meets the scrolls. (see picture 10) I caught the light right on it so you could see it. It’s easy to miss but worth mentioning. The second vase is good except for the dent on the dragon’s body on the right hand side. You can see it with the light on it (picture 11) and without, pointed to by the pen. The enamel is still intact which helps hide it unless the light hits it just right. The area affected is about 3/8 in diameter. The damaged area is also shown in full view (picture 2) on the left vase, dragon’s body close to the top of the’arch’. Again, for their age, these vases are in very good condition and are of superior quality in my opinion. On a scale of 1-10 condition wise, I give them a 9. The vintage wood stands are in good condition for their age, no real condition issues to note. I have tried very hard to take excellent pictures and describe very well the vases above. They are not perfect but they are old, very finely made and not often seen as nice as these are. Fine PAIR Antique Old Chinese Cloisonne Vases Stands Dragons & Flaming Pearl

The cloisonne work is very elaborate and required great skill to craft. The vases are quite colorful in blue, yellow, red, pink, greens and white. There are two large flying dragons chasing a flaming pearl over water around the widest part of the vase. The ground is a lovely blue enamel with clouds created by gold cloisonne wires. There is a traditional Chinese border at the base, top and above the flying dragons. The design above the dragons is full of colorful Chinese motifs including acanthus leaves and stylized lotus blooms with curling leaves. The bottom and top rim of the vases are metal with an aged patina. Each vase has “CHINA” incised in the metal on the bottom. I date the vases to late Qing (1880 – 1911) or early Republic (1912 – 1949). The stands are dark reddish brown in color with three feet and are unmarked. They are a great fit for the vases and display the pair beautifully. Dragons are greatly admired in Chinese culture and thought to rule from the heavens over all animals. But dragons are thought to be a little greedy. They are often depicted in Chinese art as chasing a flaming pearl. They never catch it! Dragons are a favorite subject in antique Chinese cloisonne and highly sought by collectors. It is great to have a matching pair of Chinese cloisonné vases with dragons. They are difficult to find in such nice condition. The pair of dragon vases are in excellent condition for their age with age appropriate wear. There is a small dent on the body of one dragon but there is no enamel loss. The metal on the bottom has tarnish and spots. Otherwise there are no chips, cracks, dents, damages or repairs to the two vases. The stands are in excellent vintage condition with expected wear. There could be surface scratches and rubs. There are no cracks, missing pieces, repairs or damage to the stands. Approximate Dimensions – One Dragon Vase. Weight: 181.2 grams. Width across (widest point): 3 3/8. Diameter of top: 1 1/2. Diameter of base: 1 7/8. Dimensions – One Old Stand. Weight of stand: 25.6 grams. Height of stands: 3/4. Display area: 1 7/8. Matching pairs of antique Chinese cloisonné dragon vases are more difficult to find than single vases. The design on these dragon vases is more elaborate than most vases.
