Front enclosure to the right with 4 large gilt toggle-and-loop buttons. The robe is in good condition, vibrant colors! Slight discolorations & stains in few places of the purple silk, both front and back front, & white sleeve bands are soiled in few places. Light blue lining has white discoloration throughout and dark stains. Late 19th Century Chinese Silk Embroidered Orange Dragon Robe. It is 61.7 inches (157 cm) across top from the end of one sleeve to the other end, and 40.1 inches (102 cm) from top to bottom. It has discoloration, stains, toning, small tears, wears, missing buttons, frayed silk, toning, and loose, pulling, and missing threads (as seen in the photos). Antique Gumps San Francisco Chinese Embroidered Black Silk Dragon Robe Fabulous

This might be something more like a piece of art you hang from a rod in your living room than something to wear. This has the Gumps of San Francisco label on it. Gumps (founded in 1861 and out of business in 2018 by brothers Solomon and Gustav) was run by Solomon’s son Alfred. He had a love of all things Oriental and began stocking his store with all manner of collectibles to sell to the new millionaires of San Francisco. This robe is of that era. The robe may be earlier. My best guess is the robe was already vintage at the time and Gump’s sewed their label into it rather than it being made for Gump’s. Robe is black silk with heavy couched gold thread embroidery. The dragons are fantastic with the embroidery being so heavy that they’re almost 3D. Parts of them are quite raised with knotwork. There are dragons chasing the flaming pearl. The robe is lined in purple silk. Most of that is intact except where it meets the outer fabric–at the sleeve ends and collar. Perhaps with a lighter silk lining and a heavier silk outer fabric it was just inevitable that it would tear away from it. The gold threads are coming loose around the collar but the rest of the embroidery is mainly intact and just gorgeous! The sleeve end to sleeve end is 60 inches and from shoulder to hem is 44 inches. Has brass ball closures. This is in excellent shape. It might have a loose thread or two just because of the sheer amount of embroidery but really looks like it was never worn. Antique Chinese Imperial Dragon Robe Qing Dynasty

A stunning blue silk dragon robe is likely dated to mid-18th to early 19th century, the Imperial Qing dynasty of China. The robe is elaborately embroidered with gold, silver and color threads with allover designs. Eight five-claw dragons roundels with flaming pearls are featured in the front, back and shoulder among the auspicious symbols such as cranes, fans and bats. It was further boarded on the skirts and sleeves with five-color waves and mandarins in garden pictorial. The robe was exquisitely crafted likely for a royal princess or a first rank consort with a petite physique suggested by the size and tailoring of the piece. Professionally framed in a lucite box for display. In Imperial Qing court, the dress followed a strict code. A female normally worn the same ranked robe as her father if not married or her husband if married. The formal occasions that required a female to wear dragon robes were far less than males, therefore less female dragon robes were produced and survived. Interestingly, female dragon robe usually didn’t have a front vent, which is found in this piece. The construction of this piece suggests that it likely served as an outer robe or possibly from an earlier period influenced by the aesthetics of the Ming dynasty. The addition of a rather informal and playful pictorial design on the sleeve also suggests that it was reserved for a semi formal occasion. Note that the previous owner displayed the robe with one side exposed to the light for many years. This caused a significant but even fading on the front that somehow is rather pleasing. The back remains an original vibrant blue color and is now on display. The robe can be easily flipped with preference. Both sides are shown in photos. Measurement shown is the frame. Fabulous Hand Embroidered Silk Robe It was once owned by a member of the Imperial Chinese Court from the period of the 1700s to 1800s. The Flying Golden Dragons chasing the Flaming Pearl indicate Royalty. The Blue Color was reserved for Minor Princes or Noblemen. The illustration of the Crane indicates that its wearer held a High Civil Office. The piece incorporates an intricate, rich brown floral pattern silk border as well as paired, united segments of the fine artistry in silk with golden thread embroidery and interweaving of multiple themes including clouds, water, cranes, dragons and various other symbolic figures. RARE CHINESE ANTIQUE 19th c QI’ING DYNASTY SILK DRAGON ROBE! The red silk of the robe decorated with 5-clawed dragons above lishui border with rolling waves surrounded with bats, sea shells, flowers, parasols, and other Buddhist auspicious symbols. The robe measures 41.5 (105.5 cm) long. Condition: good antique condition overal, considering the old age of the piece, with some staining, fading in couple of spots, and loss to the gilt of the golden metallic threads. Colors are still fresh and bright. Use the pictures as a part o f the condition report! This embroidered robe makes a beau tiful display and will be a valuable addition to any collection!
