Antique Chinese Solid Silver Pierced, Relief & Engraved Dragon Decorated Dish by Cumwo circa 1880. This Antique Chinese Footed Dish measures approximately 5 1/8 inches or 130 mm across the width or diameter of its upper rim from side to side and it stands 1 inch or 26 mm tall to the top edge of its outer rim. The dish is hand made from 75.2 grams of solid silver in a circular shape with a curved fluted hand engrave dragon scale decorated upper rim around the dishes body that has been wonderfully pierced. Raised relief and engrave decorated by hand with Chinese dragons, birds, insects, bamboo, Chinese lotus and other flowers, the dish stands on four raised relief and engrave decorated dragon paw feet and it has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram, the underside of one of its feet has been impressed with a full set of Chinese solid silver marks that include the Hong Kong silversmith or makers mark CW of Cumwo whose mark is recorded as being in use from 1850 to 1900 all as photographed below and I estimate that this dish was made circa 1870 – 1890. The condition is used and near Mint for its age. The Dish has No Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the dish stands upright, the pierced, relief and engraved dragon, bird, insect, Chinese lotus, bamboo and floral decoration is very crisp, the Chinese solid silver and Cumwo makers marks are still clearly legible although as this Chinese dish is a used antique it does have the obvious signs that it was hand made along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think that this antique Chinese dish can still be used today for trinkets or sweets and that it would make a superb addition to any cabinet or table top collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it’s around 135 or so years old.
