Chaofu Dragon Panel with Gold Threads. 19th century Late Qing Dynasty Silk and gold-foiled threads Width: 127 cm / 50 in Length: 62.5 cm / 24.6 in From a Pennsylvania estate A large 127 x 62.5 cm silk panel created from fabric originally intended for a chaofu court robe. The five-clawed dragons were created entirely from silk threads covered with gold foil, which couldn’t be sewn through the fabric, so they were instead tacked down via a technique called’couching’. The panel itself features five dragon medallion roundels, framed above and below by additional dragons hovering above roaring sea waves crashing against rocks, interspersed with auspicious Buddhist symbols. The chaofu , also known as an’audience’ robe, was the most formal type of court dress at the Qing court. These blue-black robes were worn by Qing nobles, high-ranking civil and military officials, and imperial guards. Condition: Very excellent antique condition. The front fabric is sturdy and complete, with no staining and no variations in colors. There are some minor cases of loose threads, and the blue silk backing to the reserve shows some stains. But overall, this panel is in amazing condition for an antique textile. Please examine all photos carefully, as they are part of the condition report. The various dragon robes worn in the Qing court sent signals about the rank and distinction of the wearer. Robes featuring the five-clawed dragon, called a long, could be worn by the emperor and his sons and selected court members of high distinction. Certain princes and lower nobles could wear a robe featuring the mang, or four-clawed dragon. And even lower ranking officials could wear a robe with three-clawed dragons. The presence of additional ornamentationsuch as an embroidered border picturing the sacred Mount Kunlun, in western China, which was believed to be the center of the universe, or images of the “twelve sacred symbols” the sun, moon, stars, dragon, pheasant, mountains, sacrificial cups, waterweed, grains of millet, flames, sacrificial axe, and the fu symbol, an emblem. This stunning antique find is fresh from an outstanding museum collection. It dates to the mid 19th Century era (Qing Dynasty, circa 1850 or thereabouts). This skirt is was formerly in the ethnographic textile collection of the Rochester (New York) Historical Society. It skillfully crafted from richly colored silk satin damask fabrics. It features a breathtaking array of classic Chinese design motifs and prosperity symbols: bats, fungi, cloud-forms, lotus blossoms, waves, fenghuang birds, pearls of wisdom, and -best of all- eight powerful four-toed dragons, with limbs wide akimbo, signifying strength and virilty. The reverse side of the skirt is fully lined with pale azure blue silk damask, which is beautifully woven with an intricate pattern of lotus blossoms, scrolling vines, and other decorative foliate forms. Black satin bands boldly accentuate the front, sides, and hem area. The skirt measures approximately 38″ high by a generous 103″ wide at the hem. It is in overall good to very good condition for a silk textile of such great age, with the only flaws being a bit of gentle fading to the colors on the front, a bit of light tarnish to the bronze and gold toned metallic threads, a couple of tiny age spots here and there to the design, a faint 4″ x 5″ water pot to the upper waistband, and some liberal spotting and fading to the reverse side lining. Antique Chinese Hand Embroidered Skirt made from blue color silk richly embellished with highly detailed amazing fine embroidery created in all shades of red and orange colors using satin and forbidden (Peking Knot) stitches. Depicting Flowers and a Dragon chasing a pearl…. The skirt is fully hand stitched dated most likely back to the late 19th Century to very early 1900’s, Late Qing (Ching) Dynasty. The flowers embroidered on this skirt include peony and plum blossoms, which may be representative of the four seasons. The skirt is in fine antique condition and it could be worn.
