This is a stunning quality Chinese Foochow carved wood lacquer paperweight/scroll weight, in the form of a mythical whiskered beast. It would have original had a paper makers label on the base but this has worn off. Made in Foo chow/Fuzhou famous for it’s high quality lacquer work. Dates from around 1911. In overall good condition for age but with small piece of stem missing. Some rubbing to the high points of gilding and edge wear to the corners of base – see photos or ask questions. There is a very similar one in the V & A collection, London. This paperweight was made shortly after the fall of the QUING dynasty in 1911 when China became a republic. The technique with which it was made is however more than a thousand years old. It is sometimes called bodiless lacquer because the silk core of the object is so light in weight that it feels almost like nothing. The sap of the lacquer tree was mixed with the wheat flour and applied to the core. The surface of the paperweight was then polished and painted with coloured lacquer.
