This is an antique 180 year old Qing Dynasty. Chinese wooden carving of two dragons chasing the pearl of eternal wisdom through a cloudy sky. It was carved over 180 years ago from a dense hardwood from the elm family (Yu-mu). It has been enhanced with a layer of gold. The “pearl” and dragon’s heads stand out more as it is raised another 1/4 inch higher than the carved dragon bodies and clouds (see picture 10). The dragons and clouds are very intricately carved with every scale on the dragons standing out. This carving was probably once incorporated into a much larger piece of furniture like a wardrobe or bed (see last picture). During the Chinese cultural revolution most of these fabulous carvings were destroyed. Some were saved and warehoused until now. As China attempts to maintain her long cultural heritage, such carvings are no longer being allowed out the country. This may be your last chance to own such a piece of China’s ancient past.
