A SUPERB & RARE AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE CHINESE TANG DYNASTY BRONZE DRAGON MIRROR

Up for sale is a stunning Bronze Dragon Mirror from the Tang Dynasty. The mirror is crisply cast in relief featuring a rare pattern of intertwined dragons, inner and outer rows of eight each, on a geometric patterned ground around the central suspension knot. Dragon mirrors are the most desirable patterns, and patterns that are not often seen, such as this, are even more desirable. Below are links to mirrors of similar and/or subject matter. The mirror has a built-up encrusted patina which varies in color from green to red and orange to black. Upon close inspection one can see that the patina is actually crystal growth, mostly malachite, with a small section of blue azurite. On the back of the mirror an area of textile impression can be seen in the patina – a sign of a genuine mirror as these were often wrapped for burial. Please see the images for the condition of the mirror and please feel free to ask any questions. The mirror measures approximately 7 1/8 inches across by 3/8 inches thick. The body of the ewer divided in three sections by raised bands with crass hatched design. Each section beautifully decorated with life like dragons on a ground of crashing waves. The spout in the form of a dragons head and the reverse with two dog head handles. The ewer stands 13.75 inches (35cm) tall and is in very good condition with the exception of a small area of repair and hairline on the raised rim. A beautiful and bold piece of Kangxi period porcelain. In addition, all questions must be asked at least 12 hours prior to a lot closing. Superb Huge Antique Hand Embroidered Chinese Dragon & Pearl on Black Silk Shawl

This shawl is very large, at 65 inches square with the fringe measuring another 20 inches. It is really stunning and very unusual – or at least I’ve never come across one quite like it before. It is, however, quite delicate – and I think it is a very old example of this kind of shawl. It is a Cantonese, double sided piano shawl in black silk, embroidered with two sinuous pale cream silk dragons, with the pearl of wisdom in the very centre. There is a small amount of discolouration on the cream silk, and a few loose threads, but nothing major. The fringe is a little tangled in places and could do with a bit of attention. You could use this as a hanging, or a superbly decorative bedspread, or even wear it with care. But do remember to keep it out of direct sunlight – it is a precious and rather fragile item – also quite surprisingly heavy. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The dish is hand painted with a single dragon in center center done in overglaze red surrounded by clouds done in underglaze blue. The reserves rim of the dish is decorated with a matching motif of dragons and clouds. The underside of the dish with a Qianlong seal in underglaze blue and is possible of the period. It measures 6.2 inches (15.75cm) across and is in excellent condition with the exception of one tiny spot of glaze loss on the rim. In addition, all questions must be asked at least 12 hours prior to a lot closing. This allows us time to inspect the item and take additional photos if needed.
