Chinese carved hardwood armchair which dates from the 19th century. It has a dramatic dragon design with a dragon carved back over a serpentine seat. The chair, flanked by outswept dragon carved arms, is raised on carved cabriole legs. The arm supports culminate in dragon heads with the thunderstorm pearl in their mouths. All exposed surfaces are beautifully carved. Dragon head arm rests with the body stretching to the back panel. Intricate carved detailing all over. Dragon heads on front two legs. Cloud detailing on back two legs. Paw feet on all four legs. Wear as shown in pictures. No cracks in wood. No damage other than normal wear from household use. A very good looking and well made set. Ive never seen a matched pair like this before and never with this ebonised black wash finished over a golden timber. The carving is ornate, sublime and exquisite, there is something interesting to see from every angle. These date to circa 1920 so have plenty of age related patina marks here and there, we have deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished it all over. Depth:- 53.5cm. Seat height:- 53.5cm. The front rail of the seat is decorated on the front with a pair of hornless dragons. Bronze protective mounts encase the joints.
