RARE PAIR OF ANTIQUE DECALCOMANIA GINGER JARS. Chinoiserie decoration featuring Chinese dragons or phoenixes, courtiers, noblemen or empresses, and warriors or horsemen. Probably English or American late 19th or early 20th century. These present beautifully and look very handsome on a fireplace mantel, console table or wall brackets. Approximately 13 inches tall. Orange-red, black, gold, green white. Interior paint flaking, which can be restored but does not detract from the overall appearance in my opinion (the pattern is so elaborate that the interior losses are hardly visible from the exterior). Reverse painted with applied decoration using the decalcomania or decoupage technique. Signed underneath one lid as pictured. Decalcomania from the French word décalcomanie is a decorative technique – invented in Europe in the 18th century and imported to the US in the 19th century – by which engravings and prints or decals are transferred to glass or pottery. DUE TO THE FRAGILITY OF THESE PIECES, I PREFER THAT YOU PICK THESE UP LOCALLY FROM MY DOORMAN ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE OF MANHATTAN IN NYC IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE LOCAL. The item “$4K PAIR DECALCOMANIA DECOUPAGE JAR VASE CHINOISERIE CHINESE DRAGON RED GOLD” is in sale since Tuesday, December 11, 2018. This item is in the category “Antiques\Decorative Arts\Glass\Jars”. The seller is “tuxedopark64″ and is located in New York, New York. This item can be shipped to United States.

Antique Chinoise papier mâché work box or sewing and jewelry chest, coffret with dragon feet and original side handles. Large at a full 14 in width, it would have once been fitted inside with sewing items. You can see that most if not all of the interior fittings and compartment covers, dividers remain intact, and the outer form and all-over Orient decoration is very appealing. A serpentine and pagoda-angled rise to the top add interest. A superb tabletop box for display. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, most of the hand painted Oriental scenes that decorate it are still evident and readable. The carved gold-enameled dragon feet are all there and are all original. The lower writer’s tray is intact, too. A working lock but we do not have a key to work it at listing time. We’ll try more of our stash of casket keys. There is a bit of roughness of age. This is a very early Victorian box, c. 1830-40s, so not expected to be pristine, but there is a little cracking on that back panel of the box where the hinges are. It needs a ribbon on each side to act as a brace when lid is up and open, to keep it from flopping widely open and pulling on that panel. If I could get out for a black ribbon, I’d have done it myself, but I’m at home recovering from surgery. Still, a very simple thing to do and I’ll advise it for the next owner so you don’t risk further damage to that back panel. That said, a fabulous and very large Chinoiserie chest. Don’t miss it! Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments – we love what we do!
