Antique Chinese Silk Hand Embroidered Robe w Metallic Gold Couched Dragons
This beautiful Chinese robe is made from purple silk satin, it fastens down the front with frogs. It’s hand embroidered with bats, flowers, moths and has large metallic gold couched dragons in front, back and on the sleeves. It’s lined in a pale green silk damask. The piping on the edge of the embroidered yoke is frayed a bit on both shoulders, otherwise excellent. It measures 45 inches around the chest and is 45 inches long. If there is any problem with the item, you must contact me within 3 days of receipt. As is items are non refundable. Vivid color embroidery on a blue silk satin background with some forbidden stitch and original cast bronze closures. Condition is very good to good and all original. Rare Antique blue silk Chinese dragon robe embroidered gold lamé Asian jacket
We list new items frequently. This antique silk Chinese dragon robe jacket has beautiful embroidery and details, and probably dates to about the 1920s but could easily date to earlier. It is especially hard to date textiles like these. Fine hand embroidery was an art form in China for centuries (before Marco Polo arrived in the 13th century). Chinese export goods were still popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when this jacket/robe was made. Interest faded after the 1920s, so the quality of hand work declined. This piece was expertly made of quality materials, so we can be certain it dates to the 1920s or earlier. This jacket is made of a gorgeous deep blue silk with gold, red, and green embroidery of dragons and swirling motifs. The dragons all feature white eyes with black embroidered pupils looking in various directions. There is a 12 thick band of thick striped lamè embroidery at the hem, and the sleeve and neck are edged in thick/stiff brown and gold embroidery. The closures are decorated gold metal ball buttons with frogs. The embroidery is overall in good condition for its age, but there are some definite issues, especially on the left sleeve (please view photos for close ups of this damage). In this area, whole pieces of the striped embroidery have come unfastened from the garment and the thread is hanging loose. The thread is still there, so this could be repaired/conserved. The sleeves are lined in electric blue brocade silk, but the bulk of the garment is unlined. You can see the back of the intricate embroidery work through the blue silk on the back. The seams are secure and there is no silk shredding or dry rot. There are no water stains, and I have not tried cleaning this piece at all. There are a few yellowing stains (<1/4) throughout the garment, but this is barely noticeable on the dark blue silk. With a little bit of TLC especially regards to the embroidery, this could be an amazing decorative or display piece. It is even wearable if you so choose! Antique 19 c Chinese Imperial 9 Dragon Robe
Quality antiques and jewelry for sale. Larger pic links above upper left. An Imperial 9 dragon embroidered robe with shimmering couched gold threads. The beautiful blue ground is for a 3rd rank prince. Actually there are 15 dragons total in the pattern or design (see below). The silk robe is a deep navy blue and quite large, 57 inches long with a 44 inch wide bottom, and about 85 inches cuff to cuff. The stitchery is very fine. And every stitch is with golden metallic thread. Even the various auspicious symbols are in gold thread. There is a similar one at the San Diego Museum for a lower rank prince in black ground and all metallic threads. The dragon details are extraordinary and reserved for Imperial use. The front and back are symmetrical with 3 large dragons each, plus 2 on the shoulders. There is a hidden 9th large golden dragon chasing the flaming pearl inside the right front flap when the robe is wrapped around you (see sketch of design pattern). The border band which goes around the edge and the neck have a total of 4 smaller dragons of which one is full length going up the band. Finally there is a full dragon on each sleeve band. Note the dragon detail on the cuffs and the neck band. I date this circa 1890. The pleated black lower sleeves above the wrist is a late 19th century court fashion. And see the detail in the decorative gilt buttons. Condition of the robe is very good, 90% of the gold thread is there. Neck band area has some fray and sleeve area also. This fraying is only at the join of the band to the blue robe. It is clean and some wrinkles, and ready for display. Additional notes below from John Vollmer’s — Ruling from the Dragon Throne — Ten Speed Press, 2002. Manchu nobles to the rank of third-degree prince used blue… 101 The four larger dragons were confined to the upper part of the coat. Pairs of smaller, confronted dragons were placed on the coat skirs at the front and back, with a fifth smaller dragon placed out of sight on the panel… This unseen dragon brought the total to nine, a number associated in ancient Daoist or Taoist numerology with infinity and notions of heaven. 104 discusses the arrangement of the 9 large dragons if you laid out the robe flat, figuratively unfolding at the axis of the sleeve tops. Size: 57 inches long, 44 inch wide and about 85 inches cuff to cuff. Condition: Some wear to the thread and fabric at seams and sleeves as might be expected. Hard to find 9 dragons now.
