This Large Vintage Rosewood Hand Carved Wood Statue is Rare, Unique & Hard To Find. The Rosewood Statue measures 36-1/2 Tall. The wood has a strong sweet odor. This artistic piece displays 2 Chinese Water Dragons frolicking, one on top of the other, in competition over the Wisdom Pearl which the top dragon is clutching in its claws. Included is the base with water features which is separate. The base measures 18-1/4″ Wide x 11-3/8″ Deep. This statue has two small cracks from age in the lower Dragon’s Leg, however the body is still intact. There are some chips and nicks in the wood on both Water Dragons’ fins on their backs, however the statue is still in great shape for its age. According to legend, only a carp which has managed to present itself at the Dragon gate, after many attempts to travel up the river, received the honor of being transformed into a dragon. This parable is the story of the student who wanted to serve the emperor. The carp changing into a dragon here stands as a symbol of perseverance. The pearl represents imperial wisdom. Forming an inseparable duo, they allude to social climbing within the imperial hierarchy, to power, wisdom and protection against negative influences. The Imperial Dragon is a wise animal that has special and great powers and dignity, symbolizing fertility, wisdom, auspiciousness and imperial authority. Furthermore, the dragon is the source of the elements water, wind, earth and fire and the custodian of the seasons, thus symbolizing life and prosperity. Chinese Dragons are associated with a pearl of wisdom either pursuing it, or held in the mouth, under the chin, or in the claws. This glowing pearl is said to be their source of supernatural powers and not surprisingly, dragons protect it fiercely. In connection with the Chinese dragon and the pearl has been called the image of thunder, of the moon, of the sun, of the egg emblem of the dual influences of nature, and the’pearl of potentiality’. The pearl is most often depicted as a spiral or a globe. In some paintings it is sometimes red, sometimes gold, sometimes the bluish white of a true pearl. The pearl is often accompanied by little jagged flashes that seem to spark out from it, like flames; and it almost always has an appendage in the form of a small undulating sprout, not unlike the first young shoot from a bean. Composed of nine animals, a highly positive number in symbolic terms, these imperial dragons have the head of a camel, the eyes of a demon, the ears of a cow, the antlers of a deer, the neck of a snake, the paws of a tiger, the claws of an eagle, the belly of a mollusc, the scales of a carp, and the mane and beard of a lion. The shape of the nose, which is very distinctive, looks like a mushroom, a symbol of good luck. Thanks and Good Luck!
