Antique Chinese nobility badge from a surcoat, China, mid 19thC Qing Dynasty, front facing 5 claw dragons on a roundel, were called dragon of heaven, and reserved for the highest ranking members of the Imperial family, 1st rank princes or son’s of the emperor, hand woven embroidery, very fine silk petit point on blue-black gauze, the dragon is woven with couching of several colors of metal threads, the work is so fine, that there are areas where there are up to 20 stitches per linear half inch, and if you do the math, it translates to an amazing 1600 stitches per square inch in some places, the claws are slightly foliate, a hold over from the previous century, the dragon hovers over waves and mountains and is flanked by two bats, in the waves we have scholarly scrolls, Chinese coins, ruyi heads, and wan symbols, there are some lose metal threads, and some soiling, the approximate size is 10 inches x 10.75 inches.
